Tackling Loneliness in Aged Care

While aged care is often the best or only option, it can sometimes lead to increased loneliness. Feelings of loneliness and social isolation can pose serious issues for older citizens in aged care. However, there are many things that can be done to make sure that you or your loved one are getting all of the social interaction that is needed. Some of these things include;

Family Engagement

The best way to tackle any loneliness in aged care is to ensure the individual has as much family engagement time as possible. Not everyone can have family members visit regularly due to distance, work, etc. However, phone calls, facetime calls, and even texting with family as much as possible can significantly help older individuals to feel less isolated while in aged care.

Community Activities

Another thing that can help to fight off the feelings of isolation in aged care is by getting involved in community activities! We can help to make sure that you or your loved one are aware of any community activities and are all sorted for transportation, etc to get to the activity. This is a great way for people in aged care to get that social interaction while also doing an activity and making sure they’re having fun.

Loved Entertainment

A more unconventional way to help minimise feelings of loneliness or isolation in aged care is by making sure the person is engaging in their favourite entertainment. If your loved one has any favourite films, shows, games, or music, simply engaging with these things that hold positive feelings and memories can help to get rid of any negative feelings.

While aged care can seem scary, and the risk of loneliness or isolation can be difficult, there are many ways to combat that and avoid yourself or your loved one feeling that way. Even if an individual’s family or friends cannot visit, there are many options for ensuring everyone has social interaction and community engagement!
